One sentence review – There’s more to the movie than the bloodbath
Overall, I liked this film. I didn’t expect it to start the way it did. Carrie hasn’t had sex-ed, or been given any indication about what puberty is, when she gets her first period and thinks she’s dying. The girls in the locker room start laughing and throwing (unused) tampons at her. This opening scene tells you everything you need to know about Carrie’s character and the bullying she’s been dealing with.
My one complaint is this movie has a trope that really pisses me off. I call it “the magic bj”
“The magic bj”. Definition: a woman wants a man to do something that he’s either morally opposed to, or is against his self-interest, gives him oral, and he magically does whatever crazy thing she asked for. It’s always a BJ, I’ve never seen this in a movie where the roles are reversed. The woman uses sex to manipulate and is empowered by it, which is so wrong.
The characters are believable, the music is perfect for the 70s, and the prom scene is iconic. I hope this movie taught more than a few people not to pick on the lonely, awkward girl.
